You did something wrong. In order to figure out what it is you need to give more information about everything you did.
Is this something new ( a renamed copy of aero msstyles) or an edit of another 8.1 msstyle? etc....

Don't do that. Do this instead:
1) Create a new folder on your desktop and rename it your theme name.
2) Copy aero.msstyles into the folder and rename it with your theme name.
3) Copy the shell folder from the Aero folder into the new folder too.
4) Now you should have YOURNAME folder containing YOURNAME.msstyles and a shell folder
5) Open this msstyle in WSB. It should save fine
You can do this also:
1) New > Save. Now rename the msstyle from aero to your name before saving ( don't rename the folder unless you've already created a new folder)
2) Your new msstyle will be located in your Resources > Themes > Aero folder
3) Create a new folder with your name on the Desktop. Drag/Drop your new msstyles there along with a copy of the Shell folder
4) Open the new msstyle in WSB
