Title: Windows 8.1 WSB 1.5.5.6 Critical Crash
Post by: xXiNightXx on November 15, 2013, 11:13:12 pm
Been using WSB on windows 8.1 for a while. 1.5.5.5 worked fine but once getting a fresh 1.5.5.6 copy of WSB critical crashes started to show up. The bug starts off while in testing mode. Over time, the windows explorer will start to loose some controls. After that point, the application window once moved vanishes and completely locks up. I am able to recover my theme by grabbing it from the testing folder but does not fix the fact that WSB will start to crash randomly. Has anyone else come across this issue.

And no, I have no modifications to windows other than the Unsigned Theme service.

If Explorer is having issues then it probably isn't WSB. Sounds more like a GDI leak.

Yeah I have had this as well, he means the application not explorer, the interface seems to loose functionality some times, it's a strange slow crash and leaves you having to kill the task in Task manager, it completely locks up and you need to grab the last saved msstyles from the test folder, sorry I should have reported this earlier, not sure why I haven't as it's a pretty major bug.

Well if you can reproduce it I'll try to track it down. I haven't seen it, but if explorer's not involved it would be the third time I've heard of this issue with 1556.

it just happened right as I was going to save.  http://youtu.be/ITKnpmV0fg8

That's an actual crash. Should be some info in Event Viewer.

I've had something else happen a couple times where WSB doesn't crash but freezes. It flickers, the text in TreeView doubles up, the font in Property/Values changes, I lose most of the ribbon and/or command bar and eventually everything becomes totally unresponsive. It happens during regular operation, not saving or testing. I had to close WSB using the Task Manager.

I told Panda and sent him a video. But there wasn't much to say since there wasn't an actual crash.

Anybody else ever have that happen to them?

Yeah that's what has happened to me as well, I think both crashes are related though.

I found a few error logs but not sure if they are related, I think they may be from another problem when opening a new theme, sometimes after opening a new theme when you first hit test WSB crashes.

Yeah that one happens a lot

I have crashed WSB dozens of times testing the Betas. But I have never seen the one you guys are talking about :(

Freezing is different from crashing. But they might be related.

Can one of you send me your themes so I can test it with that? Playing around with Aero isn't yielding any results.

It's not a very common problem, I can go ages without seeing it so not sure if it will help at all but here is one of the themes I was working on when it happened last http://www.mediafire.com/download/txrsiadatn1ox35/Poison.zip

I think this may have been fixed in 1.5.5.7, however I don't have full confirmation yet.

1.5.5.7 released with fixes for multiple possible memory errors, let me know if it still happens.

I was using it yesterday and it froze up, I had to kill it in Task manager, will give this one a good test run now, hopefully there will be no more crashes or lockups, also noticing some bugs with the image not showing and some that seem to be cut off on the last version, will be nice when you can get that undo/redo list populated as well with the ribbon enabled.

1.5.5.9 has the same issue still. The program eventually gives out and no longer functions unless I  force close it.

Well can you keep track of what all you're doing before it crashes? That's really the only way I can find what's causing it and fix it.

It seems to happen around the time of me reloading the test. Here is what happens when it completely locks up.

It also will happen sometimes when saving a theme while in test mode.
