Title: Top Config panel color/background
Post by: koumy on October 20, 2009, 11:21:16 am
It's being several hours I've spent on trying to modify top panel color of config pane .

I know I have to hack shell32.dll file to achieve that ( #634 picture )

WTF is it impossible on my system ??

It drives me mad , I even edited #632/633/635 pics and so long no change when rebooting system !!

I followed Spitzen advices and nothing happens while other hacks worked .

It is weird and I'm really pissed off now .

Help me understand what's wrong !

Are you editing the shell32.dll directly in the system32 folder?
I can tell you, how I edit my dll's. Don't know if this helps you...
Make a copy of the dll to your desktop. Then edit it with restorator and replace it with the original dll in system32:
Rename shell32.dll to something else and paste your modified version into the folder.
You don't need to change dll's in syswow64 folder, even if you are running a x64 system.

I proceed differently as I used to edit the original files then save them to aother location ( ie : desktop or another partition ) then replace afterwards in system32.

I 'm gonna do your way , we' ll see .

BTW  forget my question , I've found the favorites icon location .

thx ! cross fingers , but if it fails again , I'll give up that hack lol .

Thanks !

oh so an update for now , I suppose it's better than nothing  :P ( notice the left part unwanted compared to the right one correct !)

(http://free0.hiboox.com/images/4309/bf15a2088302a7068b86c04c2bba1f37.png) (http://www.hiboox.fr/go/images/informatique/snap1,bf15a2088302a7068b86c04c2bba1f37.png.html)

don't understand why editing other pics than 635 get something like that ( when replacing both 634 and 635 .  :S

I presume it has to do with that pic :

(http://free0.hiboox.com/images/4309/6d63ffc07dc1fa5b7acebc23bb54f9ca.png) (http://www.hiboox.fr/go/images/informatique/snap12,6d63ffc07dc1fa5b7acebc23bb54f9ca.png.html)

just call it the " hollow" panel so if you interrested to make config items invisible you know how to do  lol  :D

so I think I'm gonna live with that til one day I understand what's went on ^^

So changing the way od editing/replacing system files did the trick partially for me . Surely win 7 has a weird file protect system which made my life such a pain those times   :|

Use GIMP to edit this.

GIMP = best for editing .bmp files.

In case anyone else is reading this post, what happened in my case at least, is that Windows expects 32bit .bmp images in the images you replace for the control panel and almost anywhere else for that matter. It seems not all editing programs can save your images as 32bit in the programs default format, that is.

So in my case I simply found a plugin for Paint.net which enabled it to save my .bmp images in 32bit. As a result you may not need to install an entire new editing program.
